This Hazy IPA from Wooden Ship Brewing Company is intriguing, but ultimately the apricot and bitter hops don’t balance each other well enough to make this work.
Packaging
Orange fading to cream and faint tear drop pattern. The brewery name is exceedingly hard to find. And maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like the phrase “near beer.”
Look
Turns out the boring packaging was hiding a great looking beer! Truly opaque and a golden apricot color. No head to speak of. Some small clumps, which is characteristic of the style and a welcome site.
Smell
The apricot theme continues: lots of apricot on the nose, with some malt backbone. Not a lot of hops evident.
Mouthfeel
A little thin. Medium carbonation with a long, bitter finish.
Taste
Again, lots of apricot. It’s not sweet, but there is some slightly fake candy flavor I can’t place my finger on. The finish is super bitter, almost overly so.
The strong ripe apricot flavors that immediately hit your pallet, juxtaposed with the super bitter finish, are too big a contrast for me and ultimately doesn’t quite work.
Final Verdict
A decent and intriguing effort. In the end, it didn’t quite work for me, but still happy to have tried it.
