★★★★★
Hyper Cold IPA by Fair State has a lot going for it, but ultimately is done in by the raw wort flavors.
Packaging
The can’s cool—a tall boy with a green and yellow paint-swirled design that stands out.
Look
Pours a pleasant deep golden color with a slight opacity. Visually, it hits the mark.
Smell
There’s a strong raw wort character on the nose, which does not bode well for the taste.
Mouthfeel
Really nice—medium carbonation and body. Smooth and easy to drink.
Taste
Unfortunately, that raw wort note carries through to the flavor. The finish is long and bitter, and not in a good way. It’s not a disaster by any means, but I’ve had better.
Final Verdict
I’m a big fan of Fair State’s alcoholic beers, the coop approach, and the people behind it, so this was a bit of a letdown.
